If the choice is between seeing it from a cheap seat and not seeing it at all, my choice is usually to see it.

That said, I don't like heights, and there are theatres in London where I know I can't sit in the top balcony. There are others, though, where the cheapest seats are perfectly fine. I saw the West End transfer of Standing at the Sky's Edge last night from one of the cheapest seats in the house, and the view was perfectly OK (though side-on, that theatre doesn't have an upper circle).

Earlier this week, thanks to a friend's generosity, I saw the National Theatre's Dear Octopus from a seat dead-centre in the 12th row of the stalls. Yes, a vastly better seat than I had at the Gillian Lynne last night, and I loved the production. Did I have a better time because I had a more expensive seat? I had a better *view*, but I'd have enjoyed the production just as much from the back row of the circle, and I've sat in the back row of the circle in the Lyttelton many, many times.
