I guess growing up in Chicago I was just use to scrimping together change from my high school job years and then heading into town and once I paid for some type of snack along the way, train ticket, etc. etc., back then all I could afford was the rafters ... and if you've been to the theaters in Chicago - you know what those houses, I mean warehouses are like -- with the Auditorium being more like a massive airplane hangar.

Imagine my shock and pleasant surprise when I get to NYC and the rear row of the balcony at many theaters is pretty much right in line with the lower mezz of some of the theaters in Chicago.

So with that in mind, I have never found it a problem to sit in the rafters. As matter of fact, if I'm going to be up there, I always try to go for the last row when possible, that way I can jockey around in my seat and get a better angle around people's heads and not have to worry about blocking the view of someone behind me or having them kick my seat with their shoes.
