First of all, a "slap" [even if, as I suspect, actually a tap described with much hyperbole] is 100% unacceptable here.

Beyond that, what I see is another example of a real problem in the theatre (especially on Broadway), which can be summed up with one (hyphenated) word: self-entitlement.

As others have said, no one would object to someone picking up discarded playbills. And most often, a polite request for an extra would be granted unless there was a legit reason not to.

But contrary to the sense expressed by some here, while playbills are free to an audience member, they are not "free" nor is there an unlimited supply.

Taking without asking is wrong, just as it is when you see someone dump the entire condiment rack in a diner into their bag.
