I saw the original Broadway production closing week with replacements Brian Stokes Mitchell, Phyllicia Rashad, and Ben Vereen. I don't remember a huge amount about it, but I remember some things, and I remember liking it. I didn't see Encores!

One thing to remember about Encores! is that cuts are often made. Sometimes significant ones, sometimes not so significant. But I think sometimes those who do the adaptations may not realize that cutting things that seem small to them may make a bigger (negative) impact than they realize. I don't know if this happened with Jelly's Last Jam, but it's quite possible.

I wrote here recently in a reply to another Jelly's Last Jam discussion that a friend who saw the second Encores! production of Fiorello! was mystified by one scene. Then he went home and looked at the script, and it was clear, but the lines that clarified things had been cut at Encores! And he realized that the production's choices, which could have helped clarify things, didn't, but this wasn't so evident when watching the show without having read the script.
