You make a good point, but I do think there's something psychological about knowing the performance is really live - we can potentially feel that excitement even though our TV. I think it's the same kind of excitement you get with a live sporting event. Once could DVR the last game of the World Series (I'm a baseball fan so I'll go with that), shut out all possibility of finding out the score in real time - and still, it's not maybe quite as exciting as seeing it live and knowing you're "part of the event" as Sondheim wrote.

You hear the audience reaction in both cases.

Sometimes not. For instance, Passion was filmed on the Broadway set but without an audience. While a live performance might have had more edge to it, I think they were going for a more austere effect, and it works. It feels a little more like a film than theatre.
