I think this can be true, and I hope you're right... but I'd say I know many people who are not opposed to theater, like it when they like it, and will go almost only when a star they already love is involved. It doesn't smart some new love of theater as a general thing, they still know they may love it (and assume they disproportionately won't), and if they love a show a star is in I think they just as likely will think they loved it because of the star as they'll think they love theater more than they thought before. Sometimes I worry the frequency of star-driven productions just teaches people to only see theater or only pay good money for it if a star they love is in it. And they have more than enough chances to do that.
Not to be a big bahhumbug... I think what you're saying can and does happen can happen and does, but I have noticed the flip side also happening, where friends of mine, or their family, will want to go see a play because a big star is in it, and only then. I don't think these people assume they'll hate it without a star they already love, but moreso they haven't seen enough theater to know they should give it their time (and money) even without a star... they go to 2-5 shows a year probably, maybe even more, and it's because they enjoy theater sometimes, but the theater they chose to see is made up exclusively of big name star shows, shows friends or family are involved in, and maybe the "must see" thing regardless of a star.
