I always thought it was unfortunate that audiences just were not interested in seeing that show without a star in the lead. By all accounts, Balgord was terrific in the part, but I think she was probably the only non-star to ever take it on in any of the major productions. Maybe it was inevitable, given the hype over the various leading ladies and the headlines that the show made in the early days with all the backstage drama.

And, of course, not only did the casting of Balgord doom this tour, the failure of the tour also brought about the failure of Livent and the unmasking of Garth Drabinsky when Drabinsky rushed to put out an extra SHOW BOAT tour to try to pick up the business from the closed SUNSET tour, which lead to more financial irregularies and all that drama.

None of that was Balgord's fault, of course, but she was put into a terrible position by Andrew Lloyd Webber and the others behind the show. If they'd wanted to experiment and test their show to see if it could sell tickets on its own, as PHANTOM OF THE OPERA did, they should have chosen a less high-profile way to do that. I hope that Balgord's career or reputation wasn't damaged in the fallout.
