Robert Downey Jr. Played Off-Broadway

I don't believe that Robert Downey Jr. has ever appeared on Broadway (he has no credits on ibdb.com), but he was part of the cast for the musical AMERICAN PASSION at the Joyce Theatre in June and July of 1983, for which I was the box office treasurer. It opened and closed on July 10, 1983, after playing 42 previews during which there were many rewrites, all to no avail. The story was about a group of teenagers trying to win a radio contest by confessing their innermost thoughts to a DJ to get a backstage pass to meet a rock star at Madison Square Garden. Todd Graff was also in the opening night cast (just prior to his appearance on Broadway in BABY), while future successes Martha Plimpton, Erica Gimpel, and Jane Krakowski were all fired during previews (in my opinion because they were too good in their roles). Neither Downey (who was 18 at the time but looked younger) nor Graff was part of the problem; both were also good. The writing and direction, on the other hand....
