Overproduced and under-directed.
That’s perfect. I saw the original production twice, and many others over the years, and this revival didn’t come close. The orchestra sounded fabulous, but everything else was a hot mess. And what was up with that choreography?? Groban sang the hell out of the score and was fine, Ashford’s mugging was so over the top that her final few scenes, where she was brilliant, went for naught because I had stopped caring by then. |
