I enjoyed it more than you did but after being a bit horrified by the excerpts and promo performances I'd seen that Ashford was doing, I waited until Sutton and Aaron had taken over and was surprised that all that schtick was obviously Kail's koncept, because Sutton was yukking it up like nobody's business, too. The "By the Sea" antics were absurd and of course, the audience was howling and applauding and it's the rare actor who can remain unswayed by an audience's indulgence. That's why God made directors and stage managers. (I'd blamed the latter for Ashford but I'm rescinding that judgement and placing the blame on Kail.)

Tveit was far better than I'd expected. Apart from the glorious voice and dashing looks, he's never impressed me as an actor. But I think this is my favourite performance of his I've seen. I thought the adjusted score sounded lovely in his voice and his Soliloquy was really pulsating at the Wednesday matinée I saw.

For me it doesn't surpass the Staunton/Ball Chichester production, but it's up there.
