Caught Enemy of the People at yesterday's matinee.

I completely agree that things perk up considerably after the 'pause' at the one hour mark (and like the OP, I don't want to give things away, but it's a pretty startling departure from what had been a very traditional, almost old-fashioned production of the play). There's nothing wrong, of course, with an Ibsen production that leans into good acting, but I found the ensemble to be all over the place, with Imperioli a stand-out (in a good way). My companion and I were also baffled by the lighting design in the first (long) scene, which was dim and frustrating: an inauspicious way to begin an exposition-heavy sequence. Jeremy Strong is capable as the protagonist, and, like most of the production, really perks up in the second half.

This is the second time I've seen _Enemy of the People_ (the first at the A.R.T. in Boston, I believe), and I'm impressed (again) by how *good* a play it is: smart and urgent and well-constructed. I just wish this production had a bit more oomph.
