What you write is sort of what I feared this would be like, in terms of the adaptation, after that Times article a couple of weeks ago on "Ibsen whisperer" Amy Herzog. It's good that you liked it anyway.

Thomas Stockmann is such a great character for the right actor. But, of course, he should not be wholly sympathetic. If the adaptation or the production tries to make him too sympathetic, we're not seeing Ibsen, even if Ibsen does seem to have identified with him.

Is the earlier production you saw the MTC production with Boyd Gaines, either miscast or misdirected (or both), and Richard Thomas, who I think was well-cast but his performance ended up not quite working? I think Peter should be in some ways more appealing that the impossible Thomas. Peter has reason on his side. Both brothers are short-sighted, and it's important to bring out how alike they are.

I probably won't see this. Although I've gradually started going to the theatre again, it's all become way too expensive for my limited income, and I have to choose very carefully what I'm going to see.
