It is entirely possible that it was called the balcony when I was growing up but I don't recall. I started going to the theatre pretty young (with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles) and I doubt we ever sat that far away in those days (late 60s and beyond). Later I started going with friends and we sat in the cheapest seats and, as I recall, called them just that when we went to the box office. At times we did it a lot, and those were what I was referring to earlier as some of my most exciting memories in theatre.

I think just about anything can be frustrating in the right moment.(A taxi in the rain, for instance.) What I sense in the case we are talking about is that people are trying to buy tickets at times that have heightened demand (early in a run, etc.) But my sense is that pricing generally settles in, subject to certain patterns that don't require rocket science to become aware of (star is on vacation, it's a holiday weekend (or period). Tourist shows sell better in summer, "local" shows sell better when locals are not away in large numbers, etc. Plus the closer to the performance concept you mention. It is also true that open run shows become generally cheaper with time and shows generally are cheaper on early days of the week and dearer on weekends. This is all no different than buying something at the regular price (I did that last week with underwear) and then returning one package that I had picked up in the wrong size, only to find that they were 40% off. I think a lot of the disgruntlement being expressed here is not about dynamic prices but just prices in general. I doubt anyone complains when they look for tickets and discover that the tide is out.

Yes, we like to complain here. And I wish we didn't. At least not so routinely.
