I think Gwen Verdon reopened the Palace as a legit house after it had showed movies for many years starring in "Sweet Charity", after having already won 4 Tonys. The Palace was tops in vaudeville with performers like Burns and Allen, and it later had historic runs by the likes of Judy Garland. Ben Platt has talent as a singer, but hardly in a class or national/international reputation like some of the others who headlined at the Palace -- Josephine Baker, Liza Minnelli, etc. His father had already commissioned DEH for him as well as other opportunities -- that's what happens sometimes with someone wealthy and influential in the business. It didn't spare either the embarrassment of those DEH film reviews. But to think there is a non-papered audience for 18 performances and that this is historic is beyond a very expensive fantasy, which I guess Daddy can just take off his income tax.
