Especially now a days with premium pricing. But I know the fisher theater in Detroit did that in the 70s for plays and LA ahmanson does that for shows.

You raise a point that maybe it’s also done to cut back on staff. St James closes the balcony for some shows and probably it is for both staff saving and reduced seating capacity.
