...this past December. And, much to my surprise, I absolutely LOVED it. I'd seen "excerpts" of the production on TV -- like on The Graham Norton Show or the Oliviers. And those performances and the entire approach to the production and characters struck me as overbearing, strident and untrusting in the strength of the material. I'm always skeptical when people say "it just doesn't translate to a recording" (see: Imelda Staunton in Gypsy), but this was one of those cases in which that claim held true for me. For example, if you've seen that Oliviers performance of the title song, like me, you may have been struck with a sense that a little less bombast and some more nuance was in order... but... I don't know how to explain it... in the theatre, in the context of this particular production, that incredibly raw, visceral performance of the title song is absolutely thrilling... as is much of the production. I don't have a particular desire to see Redmayne, so I'm going to wait until after his run ends and, presumably, tickets are a touch more reasonable.
