I was in London a couple of years ago seeing a week of pre-planned shows but had a free night and wandered over to the 1/2 price ticket booth. Though I didn't feel like I needed to see another version of Cabaret, having seen the original Prince and Mendes productions, and dubious of the clips I'd seen of this revival, there was nothing else that appealed and the price was right (certainly well under 100 pounds). It was a drizzly cold night and there was something just magical about wandering into that warm, mysterious, cocooned space, a wonderfully artificial world of its own, and settling in (I had a perfect mezzanine seat).

Most of the original cast was gone, Aimee Lou Wood, who I knew a little from UK TV, was playing Sally, can't even remember the name of the Emcee, though he was terrific, and very charming actors as Frau Schneider and Herr Schultz. As DistantDrumming so aptly says, you just have to see this all within the context of the production, the ingenious staging and tiny unadorned set in the round, the colorful garish costumes, and how it all climaxes at the finale. If you can afford the crazy ticket prices, go in with an open mind and enjoy yourself.

Coincidentally, the next day I saw Rebecca Frecknall's revival of Streetcar with Patsy Ferran and Paul Mescal. Though I'd seen numerous productions of the play over the years, it felt like I was watching a new play and I was far more moved by Blanche's plight than ever before. I would now eagerly go to see anything Frecknall directs.
