I keep reading “it doesn’t know what it wants to be” and I keep smiling to myself thinking “good, maybe I will be surprised and not be fed the pablum I got at Water for Elephants and The Notebook.” I also like to pay attention to how something is marketed but frankly I am sick of the who, what, where questions about new shows that arrive on Broadway. I do a lot of research to ensure that the subject will be something I care about. Wikipedia is easy to use and contains footnotes for further investigation. I went into Lempicka knowing a little of who Tamara was and how she lived. I looked at some of her art and purchased an orchestra seat offered at a nice discount for a preview performance. For this I was grateful. When it popped up on TDF, I purchased it anyway thinking this is my kind of show and I will probably want to see it again.

I went to the show and loved it. There are original songs that soar and the music I wanted to hear again and have played the few songs that were available on Spotify since. I loved the art projections and lighting. And it felt like money was actually spent on this production. I thought all the performances were great. The duet that Tamara and Rafaela sing together brought me to tears. I am very happy that I will be returning for my second visit this Wednesday and that I will be in a less obstructed seat. I think that there is just a strong division of opinions on this one. I contributed my opinion on the other message board and noticed that there are about 22 positive vs about 11 negative reviews for this show at this time. And they don’t appear to be middle of the road. It’s a love hate diachotomy for the most part with this one.
