I'm curious about how this would work since the book is so different from the musical, including the ending. In fact, Maguire very specifically touched on the ending that the musical embraced and rejected it for a more realistic, bleaker end. It's been a long time since I read and book and saw the show, but my memory of my reaction to the musical is that the creators basically took the title, the character names, and the basic idea of what happened in Oz before and leading up to the arrival of Dorothy. Very little of the novel is on the stage.

Gregory Maguire's Oz books would be amazing fodder to be adapted as a long form fantasy television series by HBO or a streaming service (except that the books are mostly stand alone stories set in the same universe, rather than a series). But that would have to ignore the musical.

And I'm not sure how one would go about adding back in aspects of the novel to the musical. I think the heavier and more serious aspects of the novel would likely overwhelm the surface level story told by the musical.
