Sweeney's grosses went from reliably in the high $1m range (and even $2m in the original stars' final weeks) to a high $700k during the covers' weeks, then back up again with the arrival of the new stars. I'm guessing with the size of the orchestra and ensemble, it must be a fairly high running cost. I would assume the producers have had trouble finding another pair of stars with a similar box office pull who can sing the score and it's not worth it to run without someone who can reliably bring in $1m or more.

Six is a much smaller running cost with an infectious pop score as the main draw. & Juliet is a jukebox musical comedy with an infectious pop score as the main draw. I wish we lived in a world where Sweeney Todd was equally popular on its own, but alas!
