From experience, we know that Sondheim shows have never run long without stars. His career went from one financial flop to another--yet so many are works of genius.

Finally, we're seeing his works making a profit--have audiences changed? Maybe. The one thing we know for sure is that each of the successes had well-known personalities in them, entertainers known outside of the theatre world. They had an existing fan base that was separate and bigger than just theatre lovers.
