With respect to Mr Miller, UNCLE VANYA has no relation to 'absurdism a la Samuel Beckett'. None. Zilch. Not now. Not then. Not ever. And there are many adaptations and translations of the play that sound just fine to modern ears and don't require 'updating', adding 'slang', and making it contemporary buzzy modern dress. This play that premiered in 1899 can be very well performed set in Russia in 1899 - and mean EVERYTHING Chekhov intended. And it will seem BVERY modern to audiences. Thats why its a classic. Rewriting a play to suit the language of the moment, and the world as it is now cannot help but destroy what a writer of a 125 year old play was trying to communicate. Sorry. You are not smarter or a better writer than Chekhov.
