Don't look now but here comes the brigadier general of the purity brigade, this time with grenades even less effectual than usual.

"sound just fine to modern ears" suggests that you can speak not only for "modern ears" [seems doubtful you are equipped with such, any more than I am] but presumably for all ears. Good luck with that.

I am willing to bet you have no idea how your favorite version of Vanya would have sounded to Chekhov just as I am quite sure you have no idea how very modern that version sounds to someone (with a modern ear) encountering it for the first time.

I personally did not like this version, but it did not destroy anything Chekhov did, just as performing it in English does not destroy it (although the latter probably gets closer).

I do appreciate your apology for your final sentence. Non sequiturs are such feeble ways to attempt a point.
