I’ve said a version of this for years, only to be shouted down for enabling cultural appropriation or “corrected,” and told that Albee and Williams actually wrote neurotic gay men in drag. I’ve found no sure fire way to introduce nuance in this contention, but hold to the belief that the most powerful attributes for any writer are curiosity and imagination. The canon brims with potent works from those who beautifully harnessed both. I never deny the value of authenticity of experience and voice. But rigid rules seldom create art.
