I am a huge fan of the off-Broadway production of Here Lies Love. The score by David Byrne and Fat boy Slim was excellent and undoubtedly deserves recognition. I didn't see it on Broadway because it closed so quickly. However, if there exists a consensus that the show is worth seeing, why didn't audiences buy sufficient tickets to make it a commercial success? The production lost a whopping $22 million. Broadway is a business. Just saying. That kind of proves my point about a lack of consensus for it and virtually every other new show this season.

I am not a fan of Britney Spears and had no interest in seeing Once Upon a One More Time.

Many people hate when the title of a popular film is exploited by turning it into a Broadway musical. I get that. However, YMMV regarding Back to the Future. It has consistently sold more tickets than any other new show this season and apparently is pleasing a lot of people. Word of mouth is strong on the street -- BTW, I try to talk to at least 100 people every time I get to New York. Many ATC-ers dislike the show, but a few like KingSpeed, me, and others are fans.

Hell's Kitchen seems to be finding an audience with consistently high grosses. I think the book is slight but I appreciate the way Alicia Keys' classic songs enhance the storytelling. I was incredibly moved by Kecia Lewis' emotionally powerful performance and I did like the show. However, I am aware that many do not share my enthusiasm.

I agree with you that there seems to be unanimous praise for Illinoise among both theatregoers and critics. However, I'm not sure that will translate into awarding a dance play (based on an existing collection of songs) the Best Musical Tony. Also, is there a large enough following to make it a hit at the cavernous St. James? We will have to wait and see about that.
