"Remember mediocrity is not a mortal sin," sang J. Pierpont Finch six decades ago. Somehow it went from not being a sin to being, if not the goal, the norm.

I think awards have something to do with it, especially regarding NY theatre. Awards are going to be given no matter what type of season it's been, and the least mediocre show this season could end up with more Tony Awards than, say, "Sunday In The Park With George." To some, that will make it a classic.

What can ya say?
