You point out something very important to understanding costs today: it is an increase in quality (mostly) that drives expenses. Not that there are not also increases in quantity (and that can and do affect quality as well), but computerized and more specialized equipment enormously increases costs across most technical lines. This is something we can all relate to on a personal level; cars are more expensive and maintenance even more so because they are essentially computers on wheels, ditto for many household appliances. Fixing a lot of problems today requires a computer programmer whereas in the past, many problems were solvable in the hands of a decent electrician. And yet a lot of the same people who complain on here when they see a show that presents a "community theatre" level experience also complain about ticket prices.
