Ruminations:
What a lovely, crystalline voice Mendez has, and I agree that there’s something unendingly charming (and handsome) that works in Grof for Franklin, and Mr Harry Potter himself just shines with modesty and discipline. I do think I’ll have to go, despite having seem a film of this and 3 other live productions.
I do find Grof very interesting. It’s not that his amiability is suspect in itself, but there’s something very uncommitted about him (which is what made his work in the series LOOKING very real). Or maybe I’m envious of his perfect looks. Maybe it’s a generational thing. Is he ever earnest? (Like, he did not work at all for Alkalaitis’ Dionysus at the Delacorte, for this same reason.). I’ll have to see this one before it closes.

On Chicago:
This was my second time seeing the long-running Encores show. I can’t seem to get past the depravity of the characters or the incessant performative style. The girl (Bianca Marroquin) who play Roxie is admirably elastic, spontaneous, and attractive. She even has a catch in her voice reminiscent of Gwen Verdon. But, still, I don’t know why I should care. I certainly admire Rob Marshall that he was able to drum up some character development and a context for the movie. But this piece seems all about display, no matter how talented these performers are. What possessed Verdon to pursue this piece for adaptation, in the first place? And was it ‘fuller’ in its original version? As it is, it seems like a marvelous Vegas act, and I can understand why putting in bona fide dazzlers like Melanie Griffith and Pamela Sue Anderson would work.
