I think racial casting - particularly black/white casting - is in a different league altogether because of our shameful history of minstrel performance, etc. It's a much more visceral and emotional issue for many. Likewise, what we now call yellowface, which wasn't even a term for way too long. And of course there are double standards for opera, where white tenors do play Otello and white sopranos do play Butterfly, and like it or not, that isn't going away.

As I said, it's all a very slippery slope. And many times, the answers are very very very very vague and unsatisfying.
