I agree with this as a general producing philosophy in the overall sense. But a much admired American play that was first reviewed in only mid December doesn’t strike me as a production that needs to fold up to make room for newer work. If anything, we hear repeated, cynical grousing about the market being glutted with juke box musicals or the like; how many non musicals have taken off since the shutdown? The standout hit was the Brodericks in a 50-year-old Neil Simon play.

That’s why this piece, by an admired African-American playwright, feels like a promising direction for a venue often characterized as a place where commerce triumphs over art. I get the costs required to rehearse a new star and/or a put in for a supporting company. I’m only sad that this wildly successful crowd pleaser - that only changed houses in March - can’t run til the end of the year.
