| Sorry to be getting here a bit late. As others have noted, Davis didn't do any Broadway shows in the 1980s. Her last Broadway show was The Night of Iguana, which opened in December 1961, and which she left, early, in March 1962. As also mentioned, she attempted to come back in 1974, with Miss Moffat, which was to do a long pre-Broadway tour and open on Broadway in 1975, but all it played was two weeks in Philadelphia, after canceling a run in Baltimore, that was to have been the first stop on the tour. She bowed out of the show due to illness, and that was it. The Town Hall evening that John Springer hosted with Davis, mentioned by dasher, was on February 4, 1973. It was the first of four Legendary Ladies of the Movies evenings at Town Hall. The other three featured Sylvia Sidney, Myrna Loy and Joan Crawford. Davis had a good enough time that in March 1974, she and Springer started a tour that they called Bette Davis in Person and Film. I can't find anything stating that when she entered on that evening at Town Hall or the evenings on tour, she started with "What a dump!" It certainly sounds plausible. Thanks to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? the line had probably become famous by then. On the tour, clips with the line from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Beyond the Forest were shown. Did she also say it in person? Seems like perhaps a bit of overkill if she did. Perhaps in the 1980s, she appeared in some benefit in a Broadway house, and entered with the line. Or perhaps this author is not partly wrong, but completely wrong. |
