Totally agree with you on your first paragraph about that writer's (bitchy) attitude. But what I had found fascinating about the article was the quotes from the original creative team--and the information that such a film was even possibly going to happen back then.

One can see for one's self that writer was wrong--that Astaire was actually moving just like he originally did in that THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT film clip--that wonderful, famous Astaire walk. I had never read that the one person Sondheim had regretted not being able to write for was Astaire (of all past people). Astaire is actually my own favorite male singer (as he was Irving Berlin's). Many, many people find it an "eccentric" choice (to use a nicer adjective)

In 1976 Irving told the NY Times:
“He's ‘a perfectionist—and that's why he's so good,” Mr. Berlin declared “I've never seen anyone work as hard as he did to get a certain step. He'd get mad at himself on the set—not at other people, but at himself—when he couldn't get a step to work. “And he's not just a great dancer; he's a great singer of songs. He's as good as any of them‐‐‐as good as Jolson or Crosby or Sinatra. He's just as good a singer as he is a dancer —not necessarily because of his voice, but by his conception of projecting a song. “You give Astaire a song, and you could forget about it. He knew the song. He sang it the way you wrote it. He didn't change anything. “And if he did change anything'—Mr. Berlin's sly chuckle rattled over the telephone line—“he made it better. He might put a different emphasis on the lyric. He'd do things that you hoped others singers wouldn't do.”
