In some cases way back, a production would bring a different star in for the regular star's vacation. I seem to remember Angela Lansbury stepping in as Anna in King and I when Yul Brenner (and the regular Anna) took a multiple week vacation. I think Rachel Welch made her initial appearance in Woman of the Year during Lauren Becall's vacation before later taking over the role when Miss Becall finished her run in the show.
