The U.S. premiere of A Christmas Carol Comedy at the Hedgerow Theater Company is a thoroughly enjoyable retelling of Charles Dickens' classic holiday fable.

Benjamin Brown plays the famous Christmas curmudgeon as a buffoonish bully, while Christopher Patrick Mullen channels a seemingly endless manic energy to play every other character in the story. Katie Leaman's script is clever and there are plenty of laughs as Brown and Mullen caper, clash, and carouse around Sarah Stryker's clean and uncomplicated set.

There is room for improvement, too. Brown's Scrooge is a little too hasty in his rush to reform and that takes some of the teeth out of the story. In fact, director Pete Pryor seems to choose silly over serious throughout the production. It is a sensible choice for a comedy, but the lack of a conflict sometimes makes it hard for Brown and Mullen to connect. I suspect more connection would lead to even more humorous moments.

A Christmas Carol Comedy runs through December 30, 2022, at Hedgerow Theatre, 64 Rose Valley Rd., Media PA. Tickets are $20-$35. For tickets and information, please visit www.hedgerowtheatre.org.
