I saw JLJ during its original run on Broadway. I was a little bored and confused. For the new production -- which sure is bubbling over with big dance numbers and terrific performances -- I'm was still a little bored and confused. How unoriginal is the idea of an Angel regurgitating the life of a prodigal son. I'm not familiar with Jelly's innovations, so I somehow missed the richness he supposedly added to the genre. When I got home, I had my smart speaker play some of his original music and it was bouncy and sleek -- I really didn't hear that in the Encores production -- which was loud and raucous. Although the Blues ballads were terrific. I might have been just overwhelmed. I'm sure this will be a big hit. | |
