Um, wow. I do like to support new interpretations of established works, so I'm curious to hear from anyone who might have seen this to see if it actually works. But I confess I am puzzled by this--I find the dancing lovely but very off point (and off pointillism) and I fail to see how adding ballet is going to "finally give audiences a window into the artist". I mean, isn't that phrase a bit insulting to the authors of SUNDAY? The struggle between one's art and one's life, one's passion and one's vision and the ongoing life of a work of art are deeply embedded in this show, so...I'm also puzzled by the design which seems to be ignoring pointillism altogether by using a brush stroke design on the ballerinas. (It reminds me a bit of Jason Alexander's all-white act one finale in the Reprise production in L.A., which was a true WTF moment.) On the other hand, maybe they've found a way to make a 2024 version of the Chromalume interesting (and I legitimately mean that). Like a previous poster, I saw Graham Phillips play George at Pasadena Playhouse, and while his voice is gorgeous, his acting was, as stated, adequate and nothing more. |
