Zimmerman was faithful to the original opera. I went into the Goodman last night not knowing much about The Magic Flute, and I don't own a recording of it. I've seen the 1984 film and a production of the play at Chicago Shakespeare Theater 16 years ago, both of which featured music from Mozart's last opera -- that was the extent of my knowledge of it. The Queen of the Night had me fooled until the end of the show.
Anyway, the music was wonderful. |
