Sarastro is the good guy, unless Zimmerman has made a really radical change. The Queen of the Night is a bad lady. :) At first we think Sarastro is the bad guy because we trust the Queen of the Night, but she is scheming to take power away from the good guy, Sarastro.
Yes, it's more of an operetta than an opera. It falls into the singspiel category. The original, if performed uncut, has quite a lot of dialogue.
