I saw a late preview in London.

A lot of people seem to like it a lot more than I did. To be fair, one of the things that really grated on me - Jessie Buckley's Sally singing "toodle-f***ing-oo" at the end of the first verse in Mein Herr - was apparently gone by the opening night (three or four days after I saw it). In terms of the production concept, it struck me as an overextended game of "Hey, guys, wouldn't it be cool if we...?", without any really strong concept to link all the various ideas together. Ms. Buckley and Mr. Redmayne both gave very, very self-indulgent performances, which I suppose shouldn't be surprising given that the production originated with them, and they seemed to be in a different show than everybody else; I might have warmed to Mr. Redmayne more if I'd been even slightly curious to know what it might sound like if the Emcee was sung by Kermit the Frog.

I did like what they did to the Playhouse, and I thought the supporting performances were superb (though of course none of those actors have made the leap to New York). And I flatly refused to put a sticker over the camera lenses on my phone. I haven't felt any urge to go back and see any of the replacement casts.
