I'm curious about why STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S OLD FRIENDS ended up as a part of a season at a non-profit rather than in a commercial run on Broadway. In London, this was purely a commercial production, right?

Did it not do well enough financially to interest commercial producers, even with Peters and Salonga on board to reprise their roles in New York?

With two headliners already in place and with prospects for more (might they even utilize a revolving cast of leads a la INTO THE WOODS?), this would seem tailor-made for a commercial run on Broadway, especially since it seems unlikely that HERE WE ARE will be transferring. HERE WE ARE seems much more like material that might benefit from being shepherded by a non-profit for a Broadway transfer. Barring the unforeseen, with the MERRILY and SWEENEY revivals set to close this year, this show will be the only starry Sondheim production in town.
