It was odd to me. Considering how much B'way talent was involved in SCHMIGADOON, I just didn't see it get nearly the attention that I think it deserved -- either from theater friends on their social medla channels, nor on this board. Did the Broadway community treat it like it was -- gasp -- an L.A. thing? I think Cinco Paul's pastiche -- in season one but ESPECIALLY in season two -- was just impossibly clever. More than clever. It was nearly critical, in smart and incisive ways. I LOVED the way he sent up the redundancy of Hammerstein's lyrics at the end of Billy Bigelow's soliloquy, or poked fun at Tim Rice's hella awkward lyric scans and left-of-center metaphors (JCS's "jaded mandarin" became Schmigadoon's "sour macaroon.") You almost felt, at times, that he was trying to improve on legends like Sondheim or Stephen Schwartz; I dare say that "Kaput" is pretty much right on par with the Kander & Ebb CABARET & CHICAGO material it mimics. I would have loved to see what else Cinco Paul had in store for us and yes, I do think all of this material could work wonderfully on stage! It really says something that "Corn Puddin'" is the top-streamed song from the first season. There's a ton of heart in this writing, and its charm is undeniable. - GMB |
