I criticized the way it was produced and the many poor business decisions that were made (as others on ATC have done). I never said it was a terrible show. If it had run longer, I would have seen it on Broadway. I made 4 trips to New York this season and saw 36 shows. I try to see as many new shows as possible before making a second visit to ones I have already caught on stage. How exactly could Here Lies Love have opened in the spring? What theater was available? I'm glad you enjoyed the Broadway iteration of this musical. The off-Broadway production at the intimate Public Theater (with an all-Asian cast) was successful. The Broadway version (with an all-Filipino cast) at a much larger theater failed commercially because there wasn't enough of a paying audience to cover its capitalization and running costs. That is my definition of bad producing -- don't spend $22 million on a show for which there doesn't exist a sufficient number of theatregoers willing to pay for it. Broadway is a business. |
