I assume a new play.
Based on precedent, the pattern I've noticed is that you have to get to the 8-to-10-years-later range before you enter the grey area. Only then do they start to consider things like whether it's a new physical production, whether it's been licensed, whether it's affiliated with the original producers, etc. to assess whether it can be reasonably called a revival.
But I've noticed that if a play is within the last 7 years or so, it tends to be considered "new" regardless of the other factors. Mary Jane premiered 7 years ago, so it's approaching that grey area, but not yet in it. And even though it's usually not the sole deciding factor, the fact that it's more or less a remount of the original production further strengthens it's foothold on the "new play" label. |
