“Do we really need another AIDS play?”

“Need” is in the eye of the beholder. A wonderful playwright recommitting to her origin story and its intersection with a defining health crisis and the resulting social justice issue of the past half a century is theatrically noteworthy. The prism of time often yields new perspectives and insight. We can debate her success yet celebrate her justifiable ambitions. I’m not only close to Vogel’s age, I’m in the demographic most likely to show up to experience her shared experience. Boomers still want - still “need” - to see their stories told. Perhaps that is one valid answer to your question.
