But what's even more impressive is the last few lines of that song coupled with Richard Rodgers melody:
"that young sea-farin'
Bold and darin'
Big be-whiskered
Over-bearin'
Darlin'..."
Notice Richard Rodgers melody keeps climbing up with each phrase. And each phrase is a "positive" about Enoch -- until "overbearin'" which is a negative --- but then Hammerstein ends the stanza with "Darlin'" (a positive) and Rodgers supports that positive with the highest note sung in that stanza -- as if to say that Carrie may find Enoch a bit "over-bearing" but ultimately she loves him ("Darling") despite that one flaw!
It's a brilliant collaboration between lyricist and composer! |
