Hammerstein's unique genius lay in his mastery of simplicity--simplicity being the hardest thing in the arts to pull off convincingly.
Indeed. And simplicity and economy are all but lost on contemporary lyricists/composers, who so often feel like they need to cram endless narrative streams of talk-talk-talky 16th notes (etc) into every bar. Much as I want to champion contemporary writers, that really does bother me. More is so often less. |
