| Did Oscar Hammerstein write that first line as "The fust time he kissed me..."? Although I know that much of the "dialect" writing in the lyrics for Oklahoma comes directly from Lynn Riggs, yes, he did try something very oddly similar in Carousel. It is indeed "fust." Both shows use "keer" to mean "care," though I've never heard anyone in New England say that. "Mebbe" is another one that doesn't sound like any language I've ever heard. I'll excuse Carrie singing "(and so will my) figger" because it's clearly a comic rhyme more than anything else. I think Hammerstein was looking to be generally folksy, without perhaps carefully researching what people in Maine sound like. When I coach these songs, I tell singers to hint at something but largely take the dialect with a grain of salt. |
