Jean Arthur appeared in dozens of films from 1923 through 1934, most of which I've never seen or even heard of. Her roles were often bits and very small parts. She didn't really make an impression until 1935 in The Whole Town's Talking, which was a vehicle for Edward G. Robinson. Arthur played the love interest, had some good scenes, and showed a flair for delivering smart dialogue.

During this period IBDB lists 5 Broadway credits for her, which I believe are accurate. There was more than one female actor named Jean Arthur at the time, and IBDB lists an additional credit which probably belongs to a different Jean Arthur.

In 1936 Arthur made Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, The Ex-Mrs. Bradford, and The Plainsman, all of which put her on the path to stardom. However, despite her considerable success from 1936 through the 40's, she was never able to command the type of salary that her contemporaries like Bette Davis, Irene Dunne, Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck and others received, a situation which eventually led to her early retirement from film.
