Mary Rodgers has said that she and the authors wrote the show with Nancy Walker in mind. However, the original director George Abbott didn't want a star of Walker's stature in the role -- he wanted an unknown, which Burnett certainly was at the time. The show opened off-Broadway with Joe Bova billed first and Burnett second, both below the title. Burnett undoubtedly made the role her own and got star billing when the show moved to Broadway. I agree that the original London production and the Broadway revival with Parker were failures because of casting. I can't think of anyone today with Burnett's unique (and monumental) talents who would be exactly right for the role of Winifred in a Broadway revival. |
