It really depends on the show and the theater. While the first row of the mezzanine is my preferred location, I’ve had some exciting and memorable theater experiences from way up in the rafters: Mark Rylance in Twelfth Night; Kevin Spacey in Richard III; the entire cast of Shuffle Along last row of the Music Box (which really isn’t that far up); Jake Gyllenhall in Sunday in the Park; Emma Stone in Cabaret. I think these actors were so magnetic, they manufactured an intimacy that extended to the last rows of the theater. And I don’t think I could have enjoyed those performances any more than I did, even though I was way up. I’ve seen all of the Encores shows I’ve attended from the gallery which is high but has better sight lines than the City Center mezzanine, and the distance didn’t affect my enjoyment of the show.. On the other hand, there are some shows I’m sure I would have enjoyed more had I been closer, like the Glenn Close -John Lithgow A Delicate Balance which I’d completely forgotten I had seen till I found a Playbill in my closet. The Neil Patrick Harris Hedwig is another show I wish I had seen closer up.
